It's been several years since Michael Smith performed in Toronto.
Author of "The Dutchman," "Spoon River" and other
fine songs
recorded by Steve Goodman, Anne Hills and many others,
this Chicago-based artist began extensive touring only in recent years.
He has also written fine music for the theatre,
including the Tony-award-winning play The Grapes of Wrath
and a more autobiographical work.
His most recent album There was released in 2001.
Norm was thrilled with Michael's moving recording
of Norm's "John Dale" for the One
Voice tribute album.

Norm's Birthday! Come celebrate with us - no cover!
"Norm's Living Room" open stage in one special summer edition
Tranzac - 292 Brunswick Avenue
(south of Bloor, between Spadina & Bathurst)
Norm guests in Brian Blain's acoustic blues series while Brian is away
Schedule:
7 pm - unplugged picking session
8 pm - open stage hosted by Norm
mid-evening - feature set by Norm
all evening - birthday celebration!
Norm thanks everyone who joined in celebrating his
BIRTHDAY on Thursday
August 1 (on the actual day!) at the Tranzac,
former home of "Norm's Living Room."
Norm was enthusing for weeks about "one of my best musical evenings
ever!" Brian Blain invited Norm to be his guest in his no-cover
Thursday acoustic blues series, which is occasionally more folkie
than bluesy. When Brian found he would be out of town, he invited
Norm to host as well as guest. It was a fine combination of picking
session, open stage and fabulous extended feature set by Norm
- with some new songs! Thanks, Norm, for your birthday present to
the crowd.

SUMMER
IN THE PARK 2002
Metropolitan United Church (Queen and Church)
NOONTIME CONCERTS in DOWNTOWN TORONTO
Mondays - Fridays: Fri June 14 - Th
Aug 22, 2002
This is a fabulous concert series for anyone able
to be in downtown Toronto at noon hour on a summer weekday. We're
pleased to post the full schedule for Metropolitan United Church,
with our thank you for organizing and presenting it. Norm plays July
5, 19, August 16 (all Fridays).
Metropolitan United Church is at the northwest corner
of Church and Queen Streets in Toronto. A small stage by the church
entrance takes advantage of the lovely treed grounds, benches and
picnic tables. There is a sound system so the streetcars don't get
the upper hand.
The concerts are 12:30 noon to 1:30 pm, except
Wednesdays concerts are 12 noon - 1 pm, followed by a carillon
concert. Metropolitan's carillonneur Gerald Martindale
plays the first two weeks (June 26, July 3), followed by Andrew
Comar (July 10, 17, 31), Roy Lee (July 24, August 7, 21)
and Claire Poirier (August 14).
The concert will be cancelled if it is raining
or looks like it might rain. The music is part of a weekday
10:30 am - 2:30 pm program that also includes games and art, with
trivia on Tuesdays. The church has a webpage at www.metunited.org
